What is Fluid Mechanics?

The branch of science which deals with the study of behaviour of fluids such as liquid or gases at rest as well as in motion is called fluid mechanics.

The fluid mechanics are further decided into three parts

1. Fluid statics:
When we study about the fluids which are at rest is called fluid statics.

2. Fluid kinematics: When we study about the fluids which are in motion, without considering the pressure force is called fluid kinematics.

3. Fluid dynamics: The study of fluids which are in motion, considering the pressure force is called fluid dynamics.

Let’s check your grasp on the topic

1. The branch of science which deals with the study of behaviour of fluids at rest as well as in motion is called
(i) Fluid kinematics
(ii) Fluid dynamics
(iii) Fluid statics
(iv) Fluid mechanics

2. The study of fluids at rest is called fluid dynamics.

(ii) False

3. When we go to study of fluid which is at rest without considering the pressure force is called...................
(i) Fluid statics
(ii) Fluid mechanics

(iv) Fluid dynamics

4. Which among the following is true?
(i) Study of fluids at rest is called fluid dynamics.
(ii) Study of fluids in motion is called fluid statics.
(iii) Study of fluids at rest as well as in motion is called fluid mechanics.
(iv) Study of fluids in motion without considering its pressure force is called fluid dynamics.
